ARRIVING BY AIR (but see below about TGV access)

The best local airports are Avignon and Marseille – which latter also has some intercontinental flights.  There are also flights to Nimes, which has a shuttle bus/train connection to Avignon.

Flight information can change rapidly.  Please do check for yourself directly with the airlines’ websites before finalising any booking with us and do not book your flights until we have confirmed that we have provisionally reserved accommodation for you.

Direct flights from UK and Eire airports (A=Avignon; M=Marseille; N=Nimes):

Land by: 12:30 (A), 11:00 (M), 13:00 (N) for public transport connections all the way

(If you are prepared to take a taxi from Carpentras to Venasque for the final 25-min leg, the land-by times improve dramatically)

Return flight earliest (if returning directly from Vaison): 11:00 (A), 15:00 (M), 14:00 (N)

No limit if leaving from Avignon

Birmingham (A) Flybe (May-Sept, not daily)
Bristol Easyjet (M) (not daily, end Jun to mid-Sep only)
Dublin Aer Lingus (M) (May-Sept, not daily)

Liverpool Ryanair (N)

London Gatwick Easyjet (M), British Airways (M)
London Luton Ryanair (N) (daily)

London Stansted Ryanair (M)
Southampton (A) Flybe (not daily)

ARRIVING BY TRAIN

The easiest way to access this route is via the TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon – a direct service of just over 2.5hrs whose first stop is Avignon!  A typical rail journey from or back to the UK via Paris or Lille takes from around 6 hrs. Look at www.seat61.com/France.htm

Getting to the start of the walk:

The first hotel is in Venasque and the last in Vaison la Romaine, although you may also wish to spend a night or two in Avignon at the start or end of your walk. Transfer times (travel time only, not allowing for waiting for connections) and methods are suggested for Avignon, Marseille and Nimes airports below, and for Avignon TGV train station. Please note that public transport transfers from Avignon to Venasque are almost impossible on Sundays, and that you may need a taxi from Carpentras to Venasque on other days when the curious but reliable pre-bookable timetabled bus/taxi service from Carpentras to Venasque is not available or runs at an inconvenient time.

AVIGNON AIRPORT:

Outward: 3 buses, 2hrs OR pre-booked taxi transfer from Avignon airport to Venasque c. 1hr

Return: 3 buses, 2.5 hrs OR pre-booked taxi transfer from Vaison to Avignon airport c. 1hr

MARSEILLE AIRPORT:

Outward: 1 train, 2 buses, 3 hrs - Sunday starts may need a taxi all the way

Return: 2 buses, 1 train, 3hrs - Sunday ends may need a taxi all the way

NIMES AIRPORT:

Outward: shuttle bus, train, 2 buses, 2½ hrs

Return: as above in reverse

AVIGNON TGV:
