ARRIVING BY AIR

 

The best 'local' airports are Pisa and Florence.  Most intercontinental flights use Rome.

 

Land by: 17:30 (Pisa or Florence) for public transport connections to Siena.

Return flight earliest:  13:30 (Florence), 15:00 (Pisa).  Earlier flights possible missing breakfast. No time limit if using taxi.

ARRIVING BY TRAIN

 

Nearest railway station:
Start:  Siena
Finish:  Chiusi-Chianciano Terme

Sample rail journey from/to UK via Paris:  London: Eurostar to Paris (N) transfer by metro to Paris Bercy for night train to Florence Campo di Marte.  Transfer to Florence SMN and onto the Siena train, arriving the next morning. ~19.5 hrs.   Chiusi-Chianciano Terme:  Train to Milan, the night train to Dijon, changing onto a train for Lille Europe and then the Eurostar arriving London St Pancras International. ~18 hrs.

Getting to the start of the walk:

The first hotel is in Siena and the last in Montepulciano.  Suggested airport transfer methods are given below, together with railway station transfers.  Transfers from Rome are also straighforward - contact us for advice.

 

Airports: Pisa or Florence

Outward:  Direct bus to Siena (Pisa only) 2 hrs, OR bus/train (one/two changes, 1 ½ - 2 hrs).  Pisa has a railway station at the airport.

Return: Bus/train (and airport bus for Florence) c. 2 hrs (Florence), 3.5 hrs (Pisa)

 

Transfers from railway stations:

Outward: Local taxi from Siena railway station (10 minutes)

Return: Bus from Montepulciano to Chiusi-Chianciano Terme station takes about one hour - or local taxi.
