Southern Tuscany - Renaissance hilltop towns and classic wines

This is the Tuscan landscape at its most symbolic – rolling hills of durum wheat to feed the pasta machines of the region, protected by dramatic hilltop towns and villages, whose very stones reek of medieval power struggles and intrigue. And to assist in the consideration of these noble issues, two fine red wines, the rich Brunello di Montalcino and the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, with their vineyards at the heart of our walk. And what an itinerary! After a taxi ride from Siena, the route takes you through Montalcino, to the Abbey of Sant’ Antimo, Bagno Vignoni and its ancient thermal baths, Pienza, the best hilltop town of them all, and a final walk up from the church of San Biagio to the cathedral at Montepulciano.  Unusually for On Foot, the walking on this route is almost secondary to the destinations, and we recommend extra nights in most places to explore the treasures of these towns as well as to relax and to eat and drink well.

Walked by On Foot staff:  Simon

Standard option  (as per "Itinerary"): 7 nights, but why not stay extra nights in the hilltop towns and make your progress more leisurely?

Suggested shorter alternatives: 6 night option (miss night 4) – miss out the walk to Sant' Antimo (day 4); 5 night option (miss nights 4 and 7) – miss days 4 and 7 walking.
