Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive at Kastellaun. Settle in, have a stroll up to the castle, around the old town and back to a drink and good supper in the beer garden at this charming hotel.
Day 2 Kastellaun to Baybachtal. Get your legs working again with this gentle amble along a pleasant valley out of Kastellaun, and up onto the plateau of the Hunsrück, before finally descending into the Baybachtal, the first of the romantic wooded valleys along which you will roam over four days of your walking. (11 km, 4 hrs, CUSs 313m).  Extended version 16 kms, 5 hrs.
Day 3

Baybachtal to Ehrbachtal. Now in the valley, stay and wander along the shady woodland stream before climbing to Burg Waldeck's romantic ruin. Then walk over the watershed to your next wooded valley, the Ehrbachtal. (14 km, CUSs 622m - allow 7 hrs to include Burg Waldeck exploration).

Day 4 The Moselle Circuit. An early climb up to Ehrenburg castle is followed by an extended walk to the historic village of Alken on the banks of the Moselle, in time for a 'cake and a break' in a riverside café. The walk back includes Thurant castle and a stroll along a ridge high above the river. (19 km, 6 hrs plus castle visits, CUSs 776m). Alternatives: Stop at Alken (4 hrs) and bus back, or take the day off.
Day 5 Up the Ehrbachtal. Scramble alongside splendid rapids, cross lazy meadows, visit two castles and no fewer than 5 converted mills at which a drink can be obtained (at least in season). (20 km, 6½ hrs, CUSs 428m)
Day 6 Ehr to Braubach. A lovely day in store, starting with a trip on a scenic railway (the Hunsrückbahn) to Boppard with its Roman ancestry and Rhineside setting. After a ferry crossing to the east bank of the Rhine, the path follows the "Rheinhohenweg" high above the river, with some magnificent vistas and your goal for this final official day's walking - the Marksburg. (16 km, 6½ hrs plus visits, CUSs 693m). Alternatives: Visit Boppard, take a train to Koblenz, a trip on the Rhine.
Day 7 For your last full day you can choose: Our featured walk (to Koblenz) (4 hrs, CUSs 564m) is for serial walkers only. Or enjoy a day on the old paddlesteamer "Goethe" up the Rhine, past the Loreley to lovely Oberwesel and back. We give you information on all the options.
Day 8 Depart hotel (or choose to stay further nights).
